Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of an infant. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful tool for social activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
